A vent hood that hums and runs but fails to clear smoke is one of the most commonly misdiagnosed appliance problems. The fan motor isn’t the issue. The airflow path is.

Three things to check before scheduling a service call:

1. The grease filters. If they’ve never been cleaned or replaced, they may be 80–90% blocked. Saturated filters reduce airflow to near zero while the fan sounds completely normal. Clean or replace them first.
