San Mateo’s housing stock spans a wide age range — and oven technology has changed dramatically across that span. Older homes near downtown San Mateo and the Historic Downtown district often have basic gas or electric ranges that have been in place for 15–25 years; these are entering peak failure territory for igniters, heating elements, and thermostats. Newer builds and renovated properties near Hillsdale and Bay Meadows feature professional gas ranges and induction ovens that require brand-specific expertise to service correctly.
Both populations need quality repair — but the cost calculus differs significantly. A 20-year-old basic oven may warrant a $100–$200 element replacement and nothing more. A 7-year-old Wolf or Thermador range with a control board failure needs a $300–$500 OEM repair that preserves a $5,000–$15,000 appliance investment.
Many San Mateo homeowners attribute inconsistent baking results to their own technique when the actual cause is oven temperature drift — a universal problem in ovens over 5–7 years old. A thermostat that read accurately when installed may now run 25–40°F high or low, making reliable baking impossible without a separate oven thermometer.
Appliance ProCare technicians use calibrated digital probes to verify actual oven temperature against the set point on every oven service call. If calibration is off by more than 25°F, we adjust or replace the temperature sensor — included in the diagnostic at no extra charge.
All Appliance ProCare technicians are certified for gas appliance work in California.
Q: My oven preheats to 350°F but my baked goods are always underdone. Is this an element or a calibration issue?
A: Almost certainly calibration. An oven that shows 350°F but runs at 310°F is a thermostat drift problem — extremely common in ovens over 5 years old. We test actual temperature with a calibrated probe on every call. If it’s off by more than 25°F, we recalibrate the sensor.
Q: My gas oven ignites but then cuts out after 2–3 minutes. What’s happening?
A: A gas oven that ignites and then cuts out is almost always a failing igniter that’s drawing insufficient current to hold the gas valve open. The valve has a safety interlock that closes if igniter current drops below threshold. Igniter replacement restores normal operation: $120–$250.
